An Underemployed Option for Management of Depression

Thank you to Dr. Byun and colleagues1 for a concise review of new pharmacological treatments for depression. In the final paragraph, the authors additionally noted that nonmedication treatment options should be considered in patients who fail to respond adequately to first-line medications. Psychotherapy and exercise were offered as alternatives/adjuncts, but no mention was made of “the most effective and fastest acute treatment for major depression,”2 electroconvulsive therapy.
