Malnutrition according to ASPEN (American society of parenteral and enteral nutrition) is defined as an acute, subacute, or chronic state of nutrition, in which varying degrees of overnutrition or undernutrition with or without inflammatory activity have led to a change in body composition and diminished function.1 In this context, malnutrition can be attributed to both over and undernourished. In our study malnutrition refers to undernutrition (International Classification of Diseases—Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis codes: E40-E46) unless stated otherwise.
