Mycoplasma Pneumoniae-Induced Rash and Mucositis in a Young Adult

A 19-year-old previously healthy male presented to the emergency room with a painful blistering rash, conjunctival injection, odynophagia, and fever. Twelve days prior, the patient developed a fever of 102.5°F with minimal response to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). A few days later, he developed cough, malaise, and blisters on his lips and gums. He presented to an outside hospital where he was prescribed oral nystatin as well as miracle mouth wash and discharged home. The next day, he defervesced, but his lips began to bleed, so he visited another hospital and received an unknown intravenous antibiotic, oral cephalexin, and mupirocin ointment.
