Acute pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition with a variable clinical course. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, laboratory studies and imaging. Disease severity is assessed using clinical scoring systems or radiological assessments such as the CT Severity Index. In most cases, the disease follows a mild course; however, a minority of cases are complicated by local and systemic complications. Management is usually conservative, while interventions are indicated where common bile duct stones or local complications, such as walled-off necrosis or pseudocyst formation, coexist.
